Allegan County is located in the southwest portion of Michigan along Lake Michigan. Allegan County encompasses around 827 square miles with approximately 25 miles of Lake Michigan shore and over 95 inland lakes. The county has 24 townships. The Chippewa Indians called this area Allegan, meaning "the lake of the Algonquins?" The county seat is Allegan, Michigan. The area has always been an agricultural area until recently. Urban sprawl started 20 years around from all ends of the county. The county's Lake Michigan Shoreline has been a tourist destination for over a hundred years. The area is popular for second homes and vacation rentals.Some of the draw to the area are the beach towns of Holland, Michigan, Saugatuck, Michigan and Douglas, Michigan. A 45000 acre game area called Allegan State Game Area brings in lots of visitors all year long with hiking, hunting, snowmobiling and cross country skiing. The Saugatuck Dunes State Park makes its home in Allegan County along with Lake Allegan. The county has outdoor fun covered with lots of activities.
