Vandalia is a village located in east central Cass County within the southeast portion of Penn Township. The village covers almost a square mile and the township covers a little over 35 square miles. The village is around 10 miles from the Indiana border. There are a lot of lakes within the township:

Vandalia and the township both have a long history with the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad Society of Cass County along with Vandalia hosts the “Underground Railroad Days” each July. There is a state historical marker commemorating the Cass County Quakers and the underground railroad. The marker is in the Milo E Barnes Park, a four acre village park with an awesome playground. One of the old outlooks is located in Penn Township and is called the Bonine House.
