Your Cluttered Closet

Closets are a big draw for buyers. Who doesn’t need more space. Now you are moving it is the perfect time to organize and sort your closet mess. Part of preparing your home for sale is decluttering your closets so that a buyer can envision their items in the closet. If you are a buyer think about declutter your closet before you move. This will save you time and money when you move. Less unneeded items to pack and pay to move.

Ok, let’s get started!!

First remove everything from your closet!

Yes, everything. Wipe down the inside walls, rod and shelves. Vacuum the floor. now it’s time to take care of the mess you took out of the closet. Let’s take care of the clothes first. Make three piles: clothing you want to

  1. Keep – separate into seasons

  2. Donate – put in a bag or box and put in your trunk. get rid of quickly

  3. Toss – put in a trash bag and take outside immediately.

Remember that anything you haven’t worn in more than a year and a half shouldn’t make it to the “keep” pile. If you don’t feel good in a certain piece of clothing, it’s not worth keeping.

Sort your kept by category:

  • Sweaters

  • Tops and blouses

  • T-shirts

  • Pants

  • Shorts

  • Skirts

  • Jackets and blazers

  • Coats

  • Swimwear

  • Accessories (scarves, hats, belts, purses, ties)

Closet Organization

Sweaters work best folded on a shelf or in clear plastic bin. Think about buying skirt and pant hangers. The closet door both inside and out is a great organizer. Use hooks and a hanging shoe organizer for for purses, shoes, rolled ties and jewelry. If you have room in the closet and need a little more space for socks and underwear think about putting a small dresser in the closet. Only keep your luggage in your bedroom closet if you use it a lot. if you use it once a year for vacation store it in a guest room closet, basement or attic. Keep your seasonal clothing in clear plastic totes for easy access and visibility. Store in your closet if there is room and it does not make your closet crowded. the basement, guest room closet or attic will also do.
